Kentucky is a hidden gem tucked into the eastern United States. Located in the lush hills between the Appalachian Mountains and the Ohio River Valley, Kentucky’s natural beauty is bested only by the cultural richness of its cities. From the hustle and bustle of Louisville to the small-town pleasantry of London, Kentucky has destinations for every type of traveler.
Louisville
The largest city in Kentucky, Louisville is home to what is arguably the state’s most famous event, the Kentucky Derby. The legendary horse race is run annually on the first Saturday of May and is a perfect event for families.
Louisville is also home to multiple bourbon distilleries, including four featured on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. Louisville’s nightlife makes it a draw for solo trekkers and young couples alike. Combining modern Southern cooking with the region’s bourbon culture, Louisville’s trendy restaurants make it Kentucky’s hottest foodie destination. If you’re looking for a romantic getaway, consider looking for downtown Louisville hotels through Hotel Planner to stay near the action and enjoy Louisville’s nightlife into the early morning.
Lexington
Lexington is a mecca for both horse racers and bluegrass fans, and no trip to Kentucky is complete without visiting the city. Its central location ensures a wide diversity of events and activities.
Lexington’s status as the Horse Capital of the World can be experienced by the whole family on a farm tour of locations that the region’s thoroughbreds call home. Lexington is home to five bourbon distilleries that can be enjoyed by adults, though many have activities for kids, too.
Unique zoning laws have preserved many of the area’s green spaces within the city limits to protect the future of the beloved horse farms.
Daniel Boone National Forest
Daniel Boone National Forest is a great destination for travelers who love the outdoors. Located in eastern Kentucky, it covers more than 700,000 acres and features a wide array of outdoor recreation areas. The vast wilderness is perfect for solo hikers who want to get lost in nature, while activities like canoeing and horseback riding are great for families.
Since Daniel Boone National Forest is near London, Kentucky, you might wish to plan your trip around the annual World Chicken Festival. The festival, held in downtown London on the last full weekend of September, commemorates the life of Colonel Sanders and features the world’s largest skillet, used to cook 7,000 pieces of fried chicken throughout the weekend. Don’t worry, there’s a 5K race and a children’s Olympics event to offset all the calories!
Bowling Green
Bowling Green is a dynamic city rich with history. Founded in the early days of the frontier, it unwillingly served as the capital of Confederate Kentucky. Today, Bowling Green boasts one of GM’s flagship factories and the National Corvette Museum. The Corvette factory offers an excellent guided tour and the chance for kids to officially certify a Corvette off the assembly line!
Bowling Green’s downtown is fresh off a revitalization initiative and is a great shopping and entertainment destination. It’s one of Kentucky’s most charming cities and offers plenty of activities for any traveler.
Kentucky might not have the bustle of New York or the exotic beaches of Hawaii, but that doesn’t mean it should be ignored. All you need is a sense of adventure to appreciate this welcoming state.
